Fertigation isn't a new idea — it's a proven method used in commercial agriculture for decades, now applied to residential landscapes with precision. Here's what's actually happening when your system runs.
Nutrients where they're needed, when they're needed
Traditional fertilization scatters nutrients across the soil surface, where much of it evaporates, washes away, or never reaches the root zone. Fertigation dissolves nutrients directly into your irrigation water and delivers them precisely to the root zone — where plants can actually absorb them. The result is faster uptake, less waste, and visibly healthier growth.

Why root-zone delivery changes everything
Plants absorb water and nutrients through their roots — not their leaves, not the soil surface. When fertilizer is applied conventionally, a significant portion never makes it to the root zone. It's lost to runoff, bound up in dry topsoil, or broken down before it can be absorbed. Fertigation bypasses all of that. Nutrients arrive dissolved in water, directly at the root zone, at the moment the plant is actively taking up moisture. The result is more efficient uptake, stronger cell development, deeper color, and plants that are genuinely more resilient — not just greener on the surface.
Next-generation delivery
Nano-enabled fertigation: absorption at a different scale
Standard fertigation already outperforms surface application — but nano-technology takes the underlying principle further. By encapsulating nutrients in nano-scale particles (typically 1–100 nanometers), we can move beyond what conventional dissolved nutrients can achieve. Nano-particles are small enough to pass directly through cell walls and root membranes, bypassing the ion exchange processes that limit conventional uptake. The result is absorption that happens faster, at lower concentrations, with less waste.
Parke Services is one of a small number of residential fertigation providers incorporating nano-technology into our programs. We source nano-nutrient formulations developed for precision horticulture and calibrate them to the specific soil chemistry and plant profiles of Wasatch Back properties.
Direct cellular uptake
Conventional nutrients must be converted into ionic form and transported across root cell membranes through active processes. Nano-encapsulated nutrients can enter cells directly, reducing the energy cost to the plant and increasing the speed and completeness of absorption.
Controlled release in the root zone
Nano-carriers can be engineered to release their nutrient payload in response to specific triggers — soil pH, moisture levels, or root exudates. This means nutrients become available precisely when the plant signals it needs them, not on a fixed schedule.
Reduced antagonism between nutrients
In conventional fertigation, certain nutrients compete for the same uptake pathways — calcium and magnesium, for example, or iron and manganese. Nano-encapsulation can deliver competing nutrients in separate carriers, allowing them to be absorbed independently and eliminating the antagonism that limits conventional formulations.
Lower application rates, same or better results
Because nano-delivered nutrients are absorbed more completely, effective application rates can be significantly lower than conventional fertigation. Less product, less runoff, and less accumulation in the soil profile — while maintaining or improving plant response.
Water conservation
Less water, better results
The Wasatch Back operates under real water constraints — restrictions, limited supply, and the cost of waste. Fertigation helps on both fronts. Because nutrients are delivered with irrigation water rather than requiring separate applications, there's no need for extra watering cycles to activate surface fertilizer. And because the system is calibrated to deliver exactly what's needed, there's no over-application that requires flushing. Most properties see a measurable reduction in total water use while maintaining — or improving — landscape quality.

Research published in the journal Irrigation Science found that fertigation programs required 30–50% less total fertilizer input than conventional broadcast methods to achieve equivalent or superior plant growth outcomes — because more of what's applied is actually absorbed.
